Nick J. McLane, MD was born in Salina, Kansas and raised throughout the Midwest and Southern states.
He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry with Honors from the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida and entered USF College of Medicine in 1977. Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. McLane completed a Flexible Internship with Greenville Hospital System and then returned to Tampa to complete his residency in ophthalmology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. Dr. McLane was accepted as the first Retina Fellow in the combined retina fellowship program at Louisiana State University Medical School Department of Ophthalmology and Oschner Clinic in New Orleans, LA, completing his fellowship in 1985.
Returning to Greenville, SC in September 1985, Dr. McLane was the first fellowship-trained retina surgeon in the Upstate to perform vitrectomy surgery for retinal detachment at St. Francis Hospital, Downtown. As a solo practitioner for most of those years, Dr. McLane is trained to diagnose, treat and manage diseases and trauma of the retina and vitreous. Dr. McLane’s areas of interest include the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal detachments. Dr. McLane has a particular interest in the diagnosis and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity and has been treating infants born prematurely at Prisma HealthCare’s Bryan Neonatal Intensive Care Unit since 1985.
Dr. McLane actively volunteers at the Greenville Free Medical Clinic in both the general ophthalmology clinics and the retina specialty clinics. He coordinates the schedule to ensure that the ophthalmology clinics are staffed with volunteer physicians ready to meet the needs of our under-served patients in Greenville County. Ensuring that our local residents are able to obtain the medical services that they need in order to continue to drive, work and care for themselves and their families is a continuation of Dr. McLane’s oath as an Eagle Scout to help others at all times.
Dr. McLane and his wife, Jann, have enjoyed living in Greenville since 1985, raising their two adult daughters here who now live in Washington State and Charlotte, NC. Jann has been his business manager since 1985 but with the clinic’s relocation to the Pelham Road office she will be retiring this summer. Dr. McLane is an avid tennis player, having participated in many local, state and national tennis tournaments over the years and also enjoys golf, travel, and ballroom dancing with his wife.
A solo practitioner for over 35 years, Dr. McLane is pleased to join the outstanding team of eye care professionals at Clemson Eye to continue providing vitreoretinal care to patients throughout the Upstate. We are pleased to transition both our patients and our outstanding staff to our new location at the Clemson Eye Pelham Road clinic after July 1, 2021.
